Missouri River Walleye Fishing:
Frequently Asked Questions
Planning Your Premier Walleye Trip
1. What are your normal fishing hours?
Our premier walleye trips typically run from sunrise until early afternoon. However, we are flexible—trips may be shorter or longer depending on the weather conditions or how quickly we reach our Missouri River walleye limit for the day.
4. Is a South Dakota fishing license required?
Yes, a license is required to fish in South Dakota. We recommend purchasing yours in advance via the South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks website. If you prefer to buy one in person, there are several convenient locations in Chamberlain, SD that sell them.
7. When is the best month for walleye fishing in Chamberlain?
It depends on the experience you want! April is legendary for the massive walleye spawn near Chamberlain on Lake Francis Case. By mid-summer, the action heats up 20 miles up-river on Lake Sharpe—one of North America’s most underrated spots for both walleye and trophy smallmouth bass. In the fall, the fish return to their winter staging areas, offering incredible scenery and fast-paced action.
2. Do we need to bring our own life jackets?
No, professional-grade life jackets are supplied for all guests. If you have a personal life jacket you prefer to wear, you are more than welcome to bring it along on the boat.
5. Do children need a fishing license?
Out-of-state youth (ages 16 and under) must have a license to keep their own limit of fish. You can contact SD Game, Fish & Parks at 605.223.7660 for assistance. Note: A Social Security Number is required for all license purchases.
8. Do I need to bring my own tackle and bait?
Not at all. As part of our premier guide service, we provide all the high-quality tackle, rods, reels, and fresh bait you’ll need. We use professional-grade equipment to ensure you have the best possible chance of landing a trophy Missouri River walleye.
3. What should we bring on our South Dakota fishing trip?
To prepare for your day on the water, please bring a valid South Dakota fishing license, lunch, and plenty of warm layers (mornings in Chamberlain can be chilly!). If you'd like us to handle the food, lunches are available upon request.
6. What is the Missouri River walleye limit?
Currently, the daily walleye limit is four fish, with a possession limit of eight. Only one fish over 20 inches is allowed per day. We stay strictly up-to-date on all South Dakota fishing regulations to ensure a safe and legal trip.
9. Can we keep the fish we catch?
Absolutely! You are welcome to keep your legal catch. To make things easy for you, we provide professional fish cleaning and packaging services at the end of the day, so your fillets are ready for the pan or the freezer when you head home.
